Being diagnosed with Celiac Disease at 7 years old impacted every aspect of my life. I loved sleepovers and would have one almost every weekend. They're so much fun, but when you are mindful of gluten, it can require a bit of extra planning. Here's how you can handle the food situation to ensure your safety while still enjoying the sleepover:
Communicate with the Host: Before the sleepover, talk with your friend or their parents. Explain Celiac Disease and concerns regarding cross-contamination. This ensures a safe sleepover and this allows you to know whether or not you should bring your own food.
Pack Your Own Foods: Bring your own gluten-free foods to the sleepover. This way, you'll have safe options to enjoy GF meals and snacks while your friends are eating other foods.
REMEMBER: You cannot use the same condiments like peanut butter, because they have most likely used knives that came in contact with gluten. You should avoid any cross-contamination. In order to do this pack small, travel-sized containers of gluten-free peanut butter, jam, or any other condiments you prefer.
Focus on Other Enjoyable Food: Instead of being upset about what you can't have, focus on the other delicious gluten-free snacks or meals that will be available at the sleepover. Bring or suggest gluten-free desserts that everyone can enjoy together, creating a more inclusive and enjoyable experience for everyone. This tip is very important and is a mindset you should try to always have.
Create GF Safe Space: If you're sharing snacks or meals with others, be mindful of cross-contamination. Kids do not always understand how serious it is, so make sure you are aware of everything they do. Use separate plates, utensils, or even bring your own designated gluten-free plate to ensure your food doesn't come into contact with gluten-containing items.
Talk to Your Parents: If you're concerned about the sleepover's food situation, discuss it with your parents. They should have your back and they might have other suggestions or figure out ways to make you feel comfortable.
Remember, safety is the priority when it comes to being gluten-free. By communicating with the host, planning ahead, and bringing your own foods, you can navigate sleepovers while still having fun. Enjoy the company of your friends and the activities, and don't forget to focus on the overall experience rather than solely on the food situation. Be a kid and have fun!!!!
